New Carry-On Baggage Restrictions Summary

>> New Security Rules for U.S. and U.K.
Updated Baggage And Travel Policy Information

Agency Adjusts Liquid Ban, Aviation Threat Level Remains High

Effective Tuesday, September 26, TSA Is Adjusting The Ban On Liquids, Aerosols And Gels

There are two major changes:

1.       Travelers may now carry through security checkpoints travel-size toiletries (3 ounces or less) that fit comfortably in ONE, QUART-SIZE, clear plastic, zip-top bag.

2.       After clearing security, travelers can now bring beverages and other items purchased in the secure boarding area on-board aircraft.

At the checkpoint travelers will be asked to remove the zip-top bag of liquids and place it in a bin or on the conveyor belt. X-raying separately will allow TSA security officers to more easily examine the declared items.

In addition, larger amounts of prescription liquid medications, baby formula and diabetic glucose treatments must be declared at the checkpoint for additional screening.

It is unlikely that additional changes in the liquid, aerosol and gel policy will be made in the near future.

This security regimen applies to all domestic and international flights departing
U.S. airports. Travelers should, however, check with transportation security authorities in their country-of-origin for flights originating at non-U.S. airports.

Travel Tips To Make Your Screening Experience Hassle-free

·                                 The secret to getting through security smoothly is to de-clutter your carry-on bag. This lets our Transportation Security Officers get a clear, uncomplicated X-ray image of your carry-on.

·                                 When possible, keep packing liquids in checked baggage. You will get through security faster.   Limit quantities to what is needed for the duration of the flight.

Items purchased in the secure boarding area are for use on the immediate flight. If you must leave the secure boarding area and re-enter through the screening checkpoint, items exceeding 3 ounces that are not in the zip-top bag will again be prohibited.

The ban on liquids, aerosols and gels was implemented on August 10 after a terrorist plot was foiled. Since then, experts from around the government, including the FBI and our national labs have analyzed the information we now have and have conducted extensive explosives testing to get a better understanding of this specific threat. These changes are intended to enhance security and balance human needs because we have a better understanding of the threat and security risks associated with liquids, aerosols and gels.

In addition, TSA will be enhancing security measures throughout the airport environment – more random screening of employees, additional canine patrols, stronger air cargo security measures, more rigorous identity verification, deploying more trained security officers in bomb appraisal, and screening by observation techniques.

American Airlines To Test New A La Carte Food On Board Options
Customer and Employee Feedback Used for New Selections

FORT WORTH , Texas – American Airlines today announced a one-week test of a new a la carte snack option as part of the airline’s main cabin Food on Board program. Effective immediately, customers on select test flights this week can purchase Klondike Movie Bites® ice cream, Otis Spunkmeyer Chocolate Chunk Cookies, Lay's Stax® Crisps or Twix '4 To Go' candy bars for $3, or Dannon bottled water for $2 each during the week-long trial. The a la carte test is in addition to the complimentary beverage service, which remains unchanged, and the existing Food on Board fresh service available on American Airlines flights. American is conducting the a la carte test based on survey results and feedback from customers and employees. For example, a recent survey conducted by American showed 78 percent of respondents said they would be interested in purchasing individual items for sale onboard the aircraft. American selected a range of sweet and salty snack options to better determine customer preferences on offerings considered valuable and convenient. Based on customer and flight attendant feedback, American is testing the sale of bottled water to determine if passengers appreciate the option of purchasing personal bottles of water in flight in addition to the existing complimentary beverage service. The a la carte test will be available on selected DFW/Los Angeles, DFW/Miami and New York JFK/San Francisco routes between Sept. 25 and Oct. 1. “American Airlines is engaging our customers through this one-week test to determine if they want a la carte snack items as part of our Food on Board program,” said Tim McMahan, American’s Manager of Menu Planning & Development. “Regularly testing food and beverage options in flight gives us the opportunity to obtain direct customer and flight attendant feedback regarding our Food on Board offerings.” American launched its Food on Board program on Feb. 1, 2005, with the goal of providing quality food items for purchase in the main cabin. T he Food on Board program is available on select flights greater than three hours departing from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day. Choices vary based on flight time and destination, but currently include sandwiches, wraps, salads, Otis Spunkmeyer muffins and a snack box.

Earlier this year American Airlines, a founding member of the global oneworld® Alliance, introduced a new service to accept credit and debit cards for onboard purchases in addition to cash. Most major credit and debit cards are accepted. Receipts are available upon request.
